Order of adjectives

Put descriptions in a natural order before a noun.

Level Up! infographic: Order of adjectives
The idea

When more than one adjective comes before a noun, English normally follows a conventional order. Opinion adjectives usually come before more neutral, factual descriptions.

Usual order

opinion → size → age → shape → colour → pattern → origin / place → material → noun

You will rarely use every category at once. The sequence helps you decide what sounds natural when several adjectives appear together.

a lovely old cottage

a small round wooden table

an expensive Italian leather bag

a blue striped cotton shirt

Build the phrase

Start with the more subjective description and move towards details that are more closely connected to the noun.

  • Opinion: lovely, beautiful, expensive
  • Size / age / shape: small, old, round
  • Colour / pattern: blue, striped
  • Origin / place: Italian, Irish
  • Material: leather, wooden

a beautiful small old Italian stone house
